Z-Tec 2023/24 | Semester 2
Main topic: Revitalizing Green Spaces: Challenges and Opportunities for Generation Z
Partner: Laboratório da Paisagem – Landscape Laboratory

Students and teams: 43 undergraduate students organized into 6 multidisciplinary teams: Xeque-Mate, MyPark, Eco-Aces, theZiguais, raíZes lab, Equipa Meg.
This first edition challenged students to rethink urban green spaces in Guimarães from the perspective of Generation Z. Working with Laboratório da Paisagem (Landscape Laboratory), students explored issues such as accessibility, biodiversity, environmental awareness, community use and connection between people and public spaces. Teams focused on different local contexts, including Guimarães City Park, Vila das Taipas Park and the School of Engineering Azurém campus.
Examples of student-developed solutions:
Students designed awareness campaigns, community engagement tools, infographics, videos and proposals for more inclusive, attractive and sustainable green spaces. Their outputs aimed to encourage environmentally responsible behaviors, improve the experience of young users in urban green areas and strengthen the connection between academic learning and sustainable community development.
Z-Tec 2024/25 | Semester 1
Main topic: Caring and Learning with Generation Z
Partner: Associação de Cuidadores, Familiares e Amigos de Braga – ACFAB – Association of Caregivers, Family Members and Friends of Braga

Students and teams: 32 undergraduate engineering students organized into 6 teams.
Student teams: VIBE Z; MRJG; Geração SED; BrightMinds; Cuidar com Carinho; Cuidar+.
This edition focused on informal caregiving and the role of Generation Z in creating greater visibility, recognition, and support for caregivers. Students worked with ACFAB to understand the needs of informal caregivers and to design communication, awareness, and support-oriented solutions.
Examples of student-developed solutions:
The teams developed proposals to raise awareness about informal caregiving, improve communication with younger audiences, support caregiver visibility and promote social responsibility around care. Their work was presented publicly in the final Z-Tec event and connected with the broader “Cuidadores em Rede” congress, which took place in Braga on January 30-31, 2025, reinforcing the relationship between academic learning, civic responsibility and community needs.
Z-Tec 2024/25 | Semester 2
Main topic: Service-Learning for community engagement and social innovation
Partner: Associação de Cuidadores, Familiares e Amigos de Braga – ACFAB – Association of Caregivers, Family Members and Friends of Braga

Students and teams: 38 undergraduate students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds.
This edition continued the development of Z-Tec as an interdisciplinary Service-Learning model, involving students from engineering and non-engineering areas in the majority. The focus was on using technology, communication and creativity to respond to real partner-defined needs, while developing teamwork, responsibility, empathy, ethical awareness and employability competences.
Examples of student-developed solutions:
Students produced community-oriented outputs such as communication materials, awareness initiatives, digital or multimedia resources, stakeholder engagement proposals and reflective portfolios documenting the learning process. The edition strengthened Z-Tec’s interdisciplinary character and showed how students from different academic backgrounds can contribute complementary perspectives to social innovation.
Z-Tec 2025/26 | Semester 1
Main topic: Inclusion and Social Belonging with Generation Z
Partners: ACFAB, Laboratório da Paisagem, and the School of Engineering of University of Minho

Students and teams: 30 undergraduate engineering students organized into 5 teams.
This edition explored how Generation Z students can contribute to more inclusive, caring and sustainable environments. The projects addressed university inclusion, family and community engagement, emotional and relational dimensions of care, and inclusive approaches to sustainable landscapes. Through Service-Learning, students worked on real challenges connected with institutional and community partners, developing proposals that combined stakeholder awareness, communication, responsibility, sustainability and social innovation.
Examples of student-developed solutions:
Teams addressed themes such as an inclusive campus with Generation Z, inclusive landscapes, the role of emotions and relationships in care, and communication tools for inclusion. The edition demonstrated Z-Tec’s capacity to operate with multiple partners and to connect engineering education with social responsibility, accessibility, sustainability and human-centred innovation.
The final event with the final presentations developed by Z-Tec students’ teams also include related projects from the Nursing School and School of Languages, Arts and Human Sciences, ELACH, under the theme “Innovating to Include – Tools for Care and Transformative Communication”.
