About the City

Guimarães is a historic city that played a crucial role in the formation of Portugal, often called the "Birthplace City." It has managed to balance the preservation of its rich heritage with modern-day dynamism, making it today a vibrant and welcoming city.

2026 European Green Capital

In 2026, Guimarães is the European Green Capital, the second Portuguese city to hold the title after Lisbon in 2020. The concept is built on the idea that the title is "a means, not an end"—a tool for improving quality of life and achieving climate neutrality by 2030, with strong community mobilization, including more than 200 local initiatives. The program runs throughout the year, including the Spring Forward Festival, from May 6 to 9, Green Week, from June 4 to 7, and European Mobility Week, from September 16 to 22.

UNESCO World Heritage

The Historic Center of Guimarães and the Couros District are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
